In R&B News
August 14, 2024

Paramount and MTV announced the nominees for the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, which will be held Sept. 11 at UBS Arena in New York.

SZA leads the pack among R&B artists with five nominations, including “Snooze,” which is up for Video of the Year and Best R&B.

The hit single, which has surpassed over one billion Spotify streams, is lifted from her massive sophomore album, SOS, released Dec. 9, 2022.

SZA is also nominated for Artist of the Year, as well as Best Collaboration and Best Hip-Hop for Drake’s “Rich Baby Daddy” featuring rapper Sexyy Red.

Singer-songwriter Teddy Swims has his first four nominations, including Best New Artist and Song of the Year for “Lose Control,” his breakout single.

The retro-soul track, taken from his 2023 debut album, I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1), topped Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart and Mediabase’s Adult Contemporary and R&B radio charts.

Tyla netted three nominations: Best New Artist, Best R&B and Best Afrobeats. The latter pair is for “Water,” her award-winning single, which has been certified 2x multi-platinum. It appears on her self-titled debut album, released in March.

Other notable nominees include Usher, Victoria Monét, Chris Brown, Alicia Keys, Muni Long, Coco Jones, and Beyoncé.

The Texan diva’s No. 1 hit “Texas Hold ‘Em” is in the Song of the Year category despite not having an actual video. The country track is lifted from Beyoncé‘s latest release, Cowboy Carter.

According to MTV, this year’s nominations highlight “artists whose cultural impact and work during the last 12 months have revolutionized the music industry and sparked global conversations.”

Fan voting for nominations is underway and will continue through Thursday, Aug. 30. Votes for Best New Artist will be accepted until Tuesday, Sept. 10, the night of the ceremony. More information on voting is available at vote.mtv.com

As mentioned above, the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards will broadcast live Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 8 p.m. EST.
