Steve Harvey does not tolerate anyone who goes on podcasts to try and tear down other comedians.
On VICE TV’s Black Comedy in America, Harvey sat down for a special conversation with Cedric The Entertainer, D.L. Hughley, and host Chris Spencer about everything comedy. One topic that came up in the discussion was the authentic relationship the comedians have with each other, and Harvey described their inseparable bond that can withstand any criticism thrown their way.
Because of his close friendships with Hughley and Cedric, Harvey said he can’t stand how other comedians can go on podcasts and speak down on other comedians. Katt Williams did exactly that earlier this year when he showed up on Club Shay Shay and spewed his dislike for Harvey and other comedians.
“I be sitting up here looking at these podcasts of these other comedians that’s going on talking about other comedians, hold up dog, where did that shit come from?,” asked Harvey. “When did we become that? When did we get in the tearing each other down business? Cause you ain’t never heard me say not a disparaging remark against another comedian nowhere. You ain’t heard him, him or him cause we ain’t cut from that cloth.”
He continued, “So what is your motive for doing this here? And you’re not going to tear him down, and look, man, I got a real platform. I got a radio show to do 9.5 million people every day on it. I could cut that mic on and let you have it. I’m talking bout I could fix your career on a permanent basis partner. Cause I got four hours a day to do it. I don’t do that. I ain’t got no minutes for you, man. I’m not in the tearing down business, I’m in the uplift business regardless as to what you say.”
Harvey has been very vocal on his dislike of Williams’ actions on that infamous Club Shay Shay appearance. Last summer, Harvey was a speaker at Atlanta’s Invest Fest and emptied the trigger with his grievances over his “haters” which many believed to be aimed at Williams.
“You’ll never have a hater that’s doing better than you, always know that,” Harvey told the audience. “Don’t get off the wall to address some petty-ass boy who ain’t got shit going for himself, stop your climb on up the wall so you can come down here and talk to his little punk ass.”
He continued, “Don’t do that, man! I stay away from it. Do I want to [confront them]? Yes, because I’m a human being. And I’m hood. I used to be a fighter, and I still got hands. They slow, but if you get up on me real close, I can still knock yo’ monkey ass out. I just don’t have the quickness I had, but I can still turn my hip and shift that weight, and I’d knock yo’ short ass out. I’d shoot yo’ perm straight out yo’ head.”
